The Greenpeace Detox campaign was launched in 2011 with the goal of urging major fashion brands to actively collaborate with their suppliers to make the entire production supply chain more sustainable. The objective is clear: to eliminate the most hazardous and polluting chemicals from clothing and the environment.
It all started with investigations conducted in China, where many leading international fashion brands source their materials. Greenpeace discovered that numerous industrial plants were discharging toxic substances into the country’s main rivers, creating serious risks for the environment and public health. This gave rise to a project that commits fashion companies to ensure transparency and traceability throughout the supply chains, taking responsibility for the entire production process, not just the finished product.
Greenpeace investigations show that some chemical compounds disrupt the human hormonal system, while others affect the reproductive system. Many substances persist in the environment because they do not easily degrade and accumulate in living organisms, eventually reaching humans.
The fact is that these substances, once released in a particular region of the planet, can be transported far from their source through oceanic and atmospheric currents. Their presence has been documented in the tissues of fish, birds, whales, polar bears, and even in breast milk. This makes the problem a global-scale issue.
While acknowledging the complexity of the textile industry’s supply chain, Greenpeace calls on brands to:
To make the task easier for fashion houses around the world, a group of manufacturing companies, united in the Italian Detox Implementation Consortium, has decided to fully endorse Greenpeace’s Detox campaign without reservations.
This presents a great opportunity for major brands. Anyone who wants to produce eco-sustainably and safely for both people and the environment can do so by relying on our quality Made in Italy, which guarantees a production supply chain—from raw materials to finished product—that is fully aligned with the Detox principles.
